A Little Retail Therapy and a Legendary Bite.
Some days are made for simple adventures, and ours turned into the perfect mix of bargain hunting and iconic local flavor. We started the afternoon at Ross, wandering through aisles of unexpected finds. There’s something oddly satisfying about the treasure-hunt vibe—one minute you’re flipping through throw pillows, the next you’re debating whether you need another shirt (you probably do). We left with a couple of great deals and that small thrill that only a good discount can deliver.
From there, our day took a delicious turn.
Just a short drive away sits a true local institution: Mustard’s Last Stand. If you’re anywhere near Evanston, you know the name. If you don’t, consider this your invitation. Their Chicago‑style hot dogs are the real deal—poppy seed bun, bright green relish, onions, tomato slices, sport peppers, a pickle spear, and of course, absolutely no ketchup. Every bite is a reminder of why this style is famous in the first place.
The place has that classic, no-frills charm that makes the food taste even better. We grabbed our hot dogs, found a spot to sit, and just enjoyed the moment. Simple, satisfying, and exactly what we were craving.
By the time we headed home, we had shopping bags in the back seat and that happy, full feeling that only a great local meal can give you. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
From Hospital Halls to Hubs: A Day of Movement and Moments
Today was one of those days that starts with a mission and ends with a memory.
Our morning began with a trip to Skokie Endeavor Hospital. With the wheelchair loaded and the mobility van humming, we made our way through the brisk October air. Once there, I was gently hoyered into the CT scanner—a brief but necessary moment of stillness in an otherwise active day. The scan was quick, efficient, and thankfully uneventful.
Next stop: Food4Less supermarket. The aisles were buzzing with shoppers and the scent of fresh produce. We stocked up on essentials and a few indulgences, of course. Afterward, we dropped off my father and the groceries at home, completing the practical part of our journey.
But the day wasn’t done yet.
Maria and I decided to treat ourselves to lunch at the infamous Hubs restaurant. "You no lika da juice huh?" Known for its unapologetically hearty fare and local charm, Hubs didn’t disappoint. Between bites and laughter, we reflected on the day’s whirlwind and the quiet victories tucked inside it.
From medical scans to supermarket runs to shared meals, today reminded me that adventure doesn’t always mean faraway places—it can be found in the rhythm of everyday life.
Myomo Clinician Visit
Yesterday, Clinician Jack fitted me with the Myomo Pro for a trial run. I have to say—it was pretty cool. For a moment, I felt like Robocop or some kind of cyborg, ready to take on the world with mechanical precision.
But as the trial went on, I realized this tool wasn’t quite the right fit for me. The Myomo Pro couldn’t help with the motion I struggle with most: reaching toward the ceiling, lifting my hand high to shout “Alleluia!” That upward stretch is where my right arm faces its greatest challenge.
Jack explained that the current sensor technology isn’t quite there yet—it would take further research and development to support that kind of movement. So, while the experience was fascinating, the Myomo Pro couldn’t fully meet my needs.
Alas, it seems I wasn’t meant for the life of a cyborg after all.

Excursion to Supercuts – A Slice of Everyday Joy
Today’s adventure was a perfect blend of practicality, comfort, and a little indulgence. Maria, my sister and caregiver, helped me get ready for a much-needed haircut. We took the mobility van, with my power wheelchair in tow ♿—a smooth ride that always feels like a small victory in accessibility.
Our first stop was Dunkin’ Donuts, where I tried the Dunkin' Chipotle Hash Brown Wake-Up Wrap. It had just the right kick to wake up my taste buds and set the tone for the day. Maria and I shared a few laughs over coffee, the kind of quiet moments that make outings feel special.
At Supercuts, we were greeted by Linda, our stylist. Even though the place was buzzing with activity, they honored our appointment right away. Calling ahead to confirm wheelchair accessibility paid off—it was a seamless experience from entry to styling chair. I told Linda I wanted my hair longer on top, shorter in length overall, with a subtle fade on the sides that still allowed for styling. She listened closely and delivered exactly what I envisioned. There’s something empowering about a fresh cut that reflects your personality.
On the way home, we made a final stop at Wendy’s. I treated myself to a Son of Baconator combo with a refreshing lemonade. It was the kind of meal that says, “You’ve earned this.” And honestly, I had.
It wasn’t just a haircut—it was a reminder that with a little planning, good company, and a dash of flavor, everyday errands can turn into meaningful excursions.
Coffee Run
Life is too short for mediocre coffee, and that's where Dunkin' comes in. Power on the wheelchair, pack into the mobility van and refreshments await.
